Many of us know at least someone who has been diagnosed with Type II diabetes, whether a family member or a friend.  People with type 2 diabetes make insulin, but their cells don't use it as well as they should. Doctors call this insulin resistance. At first, the pancreas makes more insulin to try to get glucose into the cells. But eventually it can't keep up, and the sugar builds up in your blood instead. The disease has really become an epidemic in America.

Making necessary diet changes such as a low-carb diet is probably one of the most effective ways for lowering blood sugar and insulin, both for people who are diabetic and non-diabetic. But sometimes diet changes just aren’t enough and other nutrients are needed to help support the body in the best way. There is a special nutrient that has been found to improve complications of Type II diabetes and it’s called alpha-lipoic acid (ALA).

ALA is a sulfur-containing compound that affects blood glucose control by improving insulin secretion and sensitivity. All humans secrete small amounts of ALA, but some people may benefit from high amounts than their bodies produce, and higher amounts than what can be found in food such as protein from heart, liver, and kidney from mammals. Plants also contain ALA, but in much smaller amounts. The best way to get the proper amount of ALA, especially if you are diabetic is to receive a pharmacological dose.

ALA has been called the “antioxidant of antioxidants,” so it is difficult to imagine a tissue system in the body that wouldn’t benefit from it. If you are diabetic, this information would be beneficial to mention to your primary healthcare physician to see your health improve using more natural means.
