“Pumping iron.” “Would you like two tickets? To the gun show?” These may sound like phrases from those 20/30 something year old men in the gym who are working on that perfect muscular physique, but did you know that weight lifting is just as important for healthy bones as it is building muscle mass?

Resistance training with weights also has significant benefits to elderly people, for both men and women, since the loss of bone strength increases with age. Of course, it is always important to support your bones with nutrients such as vitamin K2, magnesium, calcium, vitamin D, magnesium, born, and phosphorus, but adding a physical activity such as lifting weights increases the strength in the bones immensely.

Even though many elderly people may suffer from osteoporosis as they age, weight lifting can still be a wonderful benefit to strengthening their ever-weakening bone mass. Of course, this type of activity would be best to not lift, as well as involve supervision as a precaution against injury.

Any type of exercise, even just walking, is beneficial to our health if we are consistent, but studies reveal that weight lifting and resistance exercise for middle-aged and older men and women have tremendous impact on bone mineral density. Meanwhile, you can look healthy on the outside and be healthy on the inside too!

If you have questions about specific questions about weight lifting exercises or modifications for your body type, our office would love to help you get started!
