Did your mom used to make you eat all of your vegetables before you were finished with dinner? Do you have terrible memories of being forced to eat weird tasting veggies like, gasp, Brussels sprouts? Although you probably were like most kids who struggle with eating their daily vegetables, especially veggies like Brussels sprouts, perhaps it is time for you to try to incorporate those tiny cabbages into your diet again!

Brussels sprouts are jam-packed with health-promoting phytonutrients that are extremely essential for the body. They are a member of the Cruciferae family, along with their green cousins broccoli and kale, cauliflower, kohlrabi, cabbage, mustard, collard greens, bok choy, turnips, rutabaga, and others. They may not smell the best when they are being cooked because they contain sulfur, but they have tremendous health benefits.

When you chop or chew Brussels sprouts, sulfur-containing compounds are released making the nutrients available for the body to absorb. Once absorbed into the body, the compounds begin to support growth and replication of cells, which is important to strengthen when the cells are combating toxins, infections, and nutrient deficiencies.

Another amazing health benefit of Brussels sprouts is they cleansing and detoxing properties. They help support the liver’s detoxification process by allowing specialized enzymes, which are supported by the sulfur in the Brussels sprouts, to neutralize and collect the toxins before they can harm the body. The sulfur-containing compounds in Brussels sprouts partner with vitamin K and omega-3 fatty acids to help support a normal inflammatory response by balancing fatty acids as well.

If you are not a fan of the smell of Brussels sprouts, you can always cook them lightly and add seasoning to help support the taste. Don’t allow your sense of smell to hinder your body from benefiting from these tiny powerhouse cabbages! Your mom would agree!

Testimonial

Dr. Wipperman is friendly, knowledgeable and really cares about your health. The excellent information he has to share about your spinal health is more than you might expect! His staff is warm and friendly, and really helpful. While I started seeing Dr. Wipperman for one specific problem, over the course of my care, I am truly seeing the benefits to my overall health. I highly recommend Ballas Chiropractic!
