Is there a scent that just brings great memories to your mind? There are just certain smells that just seem to bring a warmth and comfort to your soul, especially when it comes to food. Cinnamon is one of those scents for a lot of people…apple pie, anyone?

But cinnamon isn’t just soothing for the soul or the nose, but recent research has proven it is soothing for the whole body because it is loaded with nutrients that your body will greatly benefit from.

Cinnamon has high amounts of calcium, fiber, manganese, and has great antibacterial, antifungal, antimicrobial, antiviral, anti-inflammatory, and antioxidant properties because of the polyphenols found in it.

In addition to all of the nutrients found in cinnamon, it is also extremely beneficial to your brain health, by boosting cognitive function and supporting memory. The protein tau that is inhibited in cinnamon plays a huge role in the function and structure of neurons.

Cinnamon also helps prevent diseases such as cancer and heart disease and can helps lower blood sugar levels and boost insulin sensitivity in diabetic patients.

There are really two main types of cinnamon people use:

  • Ceylon cinnamon- native to Sri Lanka and southern India, many tight sticks, a highly desirable quality and texture, labeled as “true cinnamon”
  • Cassia cinnamon- originated in Southern China, but now grown in Eastern and Southern Asia, the powder you would find at a majority of grocery stores in the US, contains high amounts of coumarin, which can cause liver damage

Ways you can use cinnamon in your daily routine:

  • Flavor sweet dishes
  • Sprinkle it on yogurt or in hot tea
  • Inhale Cinnamon Essential Oil via diffuser

However you choose to use cinnamon, it's a good idea to find new ways of getting it into your diet — particularly Ceylon cinnamon — as it can offer you immense advantages to your health and lifestyle, both to soul and body!
