There is plenty of temptation out there when it comes to snack foods. It seems so much easier (and satisfying) to head to the vending machine at work and grab a bag of Doritos instead of bringing food from home.

Junk food may be more convenient, but your body needs more than processed junk to thrive. And thankfully, there is a quick, healthy snack food that takes little to no preparation that you could choose instead…

…celery!

It can be enjoyed raw or cooked and is great for weight loss, considering that it is around 95% water and high in fiber, which means you can eat a lot of it without worrying about calories or seeing a spike in blood sugar. Celery is a good source of vitamin K1, folate, potassium, calcium, and manganese. It has also been shown to lower blood pressure, which is due to its high nitrate content.

Like any food, celery isn’t a favorite for everyone, but there are many ways you can spruce up this nutritious little veggie to make it more palatable. Try a little dipping sauce like ranch dressing, hummus, or even peanut butter- “ants on a log” anyone?

Just like most produce that we recommend, we always suggest purchasing fruit and vegetables from the organic section at your grocery store, and celery is no different- it is listed as a commonly consumed food that is high in pesticide residues. Always be sure to wash those fruits and veggies before you eat them!
