Do you have your summer bod ready yet? If not, there’s still time! And the good news is that you don’t have to spend hours and days upon days at the gym busting tail to get into shape and feel healthy.

A huge reason people don’t fit exercise into their day is because they think it is too much of a time commitment, but honestly, it doesn’t have to be. Research points to the fact that very short intervals of high intensity training may have the same or even better results as long, drawn out work outs and they may be more enjoyable too. Young males who spend a lot of time sitting and post-menopausal women with type 2 diabetes were among two groups in a 12-week Canadian study. The type of exercise used in this study was cycling- groups that exercised with a low intensity for a longer period of time around 45 minutes vs groups who worked out for 10-20 minutes with short, high intensity cycle sprints combined with a couple minutes of slow cycling.

Those who exercised with shorter, more intense activity had greater benefit than those who worked out for a longer session. They had wonderful physical results such as loss of total body fat and an increase in muscle mass with no change in diet.

Of course, the main exercise used in this study was cycling, but any kind of exercise it better than none at all! If it is a work out regime that you enjoy, you are more likely to stick with it long term, so it’s best that you find something fun while you sweat. With the results of this study, you don’t have to carve out a giant chunk of your day either. No need to train for a triathlon (unless you want to!) Just get moving and see how different you feel and look; perhaps those minutes, when executed properly, will reap great results for you within mere months.
